Light after sunset! I participated in Lux Helsinki light festival (held 31.12.2011– 9.1.2012 in Helsinki) with an own design lantern made from recycled cord.

My design was part of a collaborate light installation, “Lantern Park” in which participated over 50 participants of different artist groups and design schools. The Lantern Park created a light path to Hesperia Park, in between Finlandia House and National Opera.

Lantern is made 90% of recycled material, mainly recycled cord taken from used electronics; (e.g. printers, phones, faxes, mixers, blenders, computers and different kind of cables.) I found material from recycling centers and Sortti-asema recycling stations. I used also 2 pcs used children’s hockey helmet nets and for the light source a led light for outdoor use (with a shield).

Cords that i used were all different shades of white and light greys and there were also at least ten different thicknesses of cords. Lengths varied from 50cm to 10 metres (when i got really lucky- as the longer ones were much easier to crochet with bare hands).

Warm thanks to helpful staff at Konala Sortti-asema!
